She's back — and this year's crop is the most vibrant yet.

The Ejo Heza women's producer cooperative returns for what is now over 12 years of partnership — one of the longest and most meaningful relationships in our sourcing program. This year's washed Bourbon from Rwanda's Kopakama cooperative is perhaps the most explosive crop we've poured yet: juicy, dynamic, and brilliantly crisp, with notes of red grapefruit, peach, and cherry blossom that hit with the kind of punchy, fruit-forward energy that calls to mind the best Kenyan lots.

Ejo Heza — "brighter tomorrow" in Kinyarwanda — is an all-women's producer subgroup within the larger Kopakama cooperative, founded after the Rwandan genocide with a mission of rebuilding community and creating lasting economic opportunity for women in the region. Year after year, their coffee speaks for itself.

ABOUT THE COFFEE

IN FOCUS: Rwanda Ejo Heza

Producer & Cooperative
Ejo Heza is a women's producer subgroup within the Kopakama cooperative — itself founded in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide with the mission of uniting people for a common good and rebuilding a healthy industry and community. Ejo Heza was established within that structure to provide even greater opportunity, equitability, and growth specifically for women in the community. Its name says it all: "brighter tomorrow."

The cooperative has since become a recognized leader in social and gender equality in its region, reinvesting in community programs, building infrastructure, and producing award-winning coffees year after year. We've been proud partners for over 12 years, and we've joined a group of roasters paying additional premiums above the purchase price of the coffee to further invest in their community programs and operational infrastructure — a small individual commitment that carries meaningful combined impact at origin.

Varietal
Bourbon — one of the most celebrated foundational varieties in specialty coffee, prized for its sweetness, balance, and elegant structure. Rwandan Bourbon grown at altitude is capable of producing some of the most vivid and nuanced expressions of the variety, and Ejo Heza is a consistent proof of that.

Process
Fully washed, with a careful multi-stage process: cherries are depulped using a disk depulper, then undergo wet fermentation for 12–18 hours, followed by a soak in a separate clean-water tank for 16–24 hours before being sundried on raised beds. This methodical process is a significant contributor to the clarity, juiciness, and brightness that define this lot year after year.

Cup Profile
This year's crop is the most amplified we've tasted — every note vivid, crisp, and turned up. Red grapefruit and peach lead with real juice and punch, while cherry blossom adds a floral lift that anchors the cup between those bursts of fruit and sugar. Dynamic and layered, it carries an almost Kenyan quality in how alive and expressive it feels in the cup. A perfect spring and warm-weather coffee, and our finest Ejo Heza yet.
