Coffee education classes for our community and coffee enthusiasts

DOCR has been dedicated to equipping our baristas with the knowledge and skills required to excel in serving our communities through exceptional coffee practices. Our educational resources now extend beyond our team — reaching a wider audience in our valued customers through public-facing classes. These classes are hosted at our Training Lab inside our Ferndale Cafe + HQ, located at 927 Hilton Rd. Class tickets can be purchased on our Eventbrite!

Below is a list of our public education curriculum and classes we currently offer!

Beginner Latte Art

In this class you will learn how to properly steam milk and pour latte art. We'll cover milk-steaming theory and the fundamentals of pouring basic latte art.

Coffee At Origin + Harvesting

A broad overview about coffee, its origin, and how it's harvested from seed to cup. You'll also learn about how decaf coffee is produced, coffee processing methods and the roasting processes and procedures.

Brewing Basics

We’ll teach you how to brew coffee with two different methods, and the fundamentals of drip filtration and full immersion brewing. We’ll also hone in on tasting notes while comparing the two methods, as well as teach you our very own pour over recipe.

Introduction to Espresso

What exactly is espresso and how does it differ from drip coffee? We’ll teach you all you need to know and how to best prepare your puck to pull delicious espresso.

Palate + Sensory Study

We'll spend time evaluating the tasting notes and other characteristics of coffee beans to judge their quality through fragrance, acidity, aftertaste, balance, body and flavor.

Fundamentals of Extraction

We'll take a deep dive in how to extract the best coffee through different methods.

Roastery Tour

Get a tour of our roasting facility at our Ferndale Cafe + HQ to learn about our operation and process. We'll show you how we roast coffee and taste some of our current offerings. You'll also go home with a bag of freshly-roasted beans!
