DOCR Academy Classes

DOCR Academy is designed for working baristas, aspiring coffee professionals, and cafe owners, or operators seeking a structured training program for their teams. It is also well-suited for those considering a career in the specialty coffee industry who want a credentialed foundation before entering the workforce.

No prior experience is required for any DOCR Academy course.

Traveling to attend a DOCR Academy class? Students near and far are welcome and encouraged to attend! Ferndale is a walkable, vibrant neighborhood with plenty of nearby hotels, restaurants, and local spots to explore before or after your class. We're always happy to share our local favorites. Please reach out to us directly at info@dessertoasiscoffee.com and our team will assist with logistical guidance, including information on accommodations near our Ferndale Cafe + HQ where DOCR Academy classes will be held.

DOCR Academy students will receive a certificate of completion for the class taken, as well as supplemental class materials, and a special designed print to commemorate your time as an Academy student.

Students who complete our three-day Barista Masterclass will also receive a personalized letter of recommendation from our Coffee Educators. They will also have the opportunity to use DOCR Coffee Educators as references on their resume.

Classes are hosted in our Training Lab at Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters' Headquarters + Cafe in Ferndale, Mich.

Our classes will range anywhere from half-day to three-day courses with a half-day being 4 hours and a full day being 8 hours long.

Here are the current timelines for our class curriculum:

• Advanced Latte Art Class — Half Day | One 4 hour session
• Espresso Masterclass — One Day
• Filter Brewing Masterclass — One Day | One 8-hour session
• Origin to Cupping Table — One Day | One 8-hour session
• Espresso & Milk Masterclass — Two Days | Two 8-hour sessions
• Barista Masterclass — Three Days | Three 8-hour sessions

DOCR Academy curriculum was specifically developed with the intention of offering more curated theory, in-depth workshops with one-on-one time between students and DOCR's Coffee Educators. We also wanted to offer a more well-rounded, hyper-focused coffee education for those already in the industry or those passionate about receiving certification in specialty coffee. No prior experience is necessary for any classes.

Our EDU DEPT's Public Classes are specifically formulated educational classes with a target audience for those who are curious about coffee and simply just wanting to learn more. These classes are fun, hands-on, and include anything from coffee tastings to beginner latte art with a set amount of students in a relaxed, laid-back environment. They are casual and composed classes that lean more toward an entry-level set of students. These classes are rooted in the idea that our local communities can learn more about how DOCR operates, and the approach we take to serving coffee and hospitality.

Each DOCR Academy class comes with certification at the end for the curriculum covered. 

Upon completion of the Barista Masterclass three-day course, students will receive the additional opportunity for quarterly check-ins with DOCR's EDU DEPT Coffee Educators. These meetings will ensure your continued relationship with DOCR is maintained, and where we can assist with any follow-up questions or industry connections that may be helpful to your career in the coffee industry.

DOCR Academy tickets are nonrefundable. In cases of scheduling conflicts or emergencies, please email our EDU DEPT team at info@dessertoasiscoffee.com at least one week in advance. We’ll work with you to transfer your ticket to another date. Advance notice also helps us open spots for other participants.
