ABOUT THE COFFEE

IN FOCUS: Kenya AA Kiamugumo

Producer & Washing Station
Kiamugumo Washing Station, also known as a coffee factory, serves smallholder producers in the Nyangeni subregion of Kirinyaga County. Farmers deliver ripe coffee cherries to the station, where the coffee is carefully processed and dried before being prepared for export.

Beyond processing, Kiamugumo supports its contributing farmers through operational resources, production support, infrastructure, and educational training. These efforts are designed to improve coffee production while expanding farmers' access to knowledge and opportunities for the long term.

Varietal
This lot is a blend of four classic Kenyan varieties: SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11.

SL28 and SL34 are especially celebrated for their ability to produce coffees with vibrant acidity, complex fruit character, and distinctive aromatics. Batian and Ruiru 11 are newer varieties developed in Kenya with an emphasis on disease resistance and productivity while maintaining quality potential in the cup.

Processing
Kiamugumo follows the traditional Kenyan washed process, known for its meticulous fermentation, washing, and soaking stages. Ripe cherries are selectively harvested and depulped the same day they arrive at the washing station. The coffee then ferments in open-air concrete tanks for 24–48 hours before being thoroughly washed through water channels.Following fermentation and washing, the coffee undergoes an additional 12–72 hour underwater soak before being transferred to raised drying beds. This extended washing and soaking process is a distinctive part of the classic Kenyan preparation style, helping create the exceptional clarity and sparkling acidity found in the cup.

Cup Profile
This coffee is exceptionally clean, juicy, and refreshing, with a sparkling acidity that carries layers of fruit throughout the cup. Bright pomegranate and tart black currant meet softer plum and deep purple grape, while pops of tropical pineapple add brightness and lift. A sweet, refined finish rounds out the cup, creating a beautifully balanced expression of classic Kenyan coffee.
