Esperanza is back! This year’s release from Diego Robelo and the Aquiares Estate showcases the same meticulous care and progressive approach that made last year’s lot a standout. Grown in Costa Rica’s Turrialba region, this coffee is a rare hybrid varietal — one of the few produced commercially in the country.

The result is a beautifully structured cup with notes of blackberry, lime, and brown sugar, carrying the hallmark clarity of an African-style washed process. On filter, the body refined and expressive with bright lime acidity, juicy blackberry sweetness, and a soft brown sugar finish.

ABOUT THE COFFEE

IN FOCUS: Costa Rica Aquiares Estate

The Esperanza varietal is a hybrid of Sarchimor T-5296 and a wild Ethiopian variety (ET25) — both uncommon to Costa Rica. The team at Aquiares has become one of the few to cultivate it successfully, thanks to their deep expertise in soil and water management. The varietal is disease-resistant, high-yielding, and remarkably complex in the cup, uniting durability with nuance.

Its African Washed process mirrors techniques often seen in Kenya — involving multiple washing and fermentation steps, followed by slow drying on raised beds for 18–24 days in solar dryers. This precision yields a clean, vibrant, and fruit-forward cup.

This year’s harvest is slightly rounder and more developed than last year’s, balancing sweetness and depth with refined acidity.
