Meet our Costa Rica Aquiares African Washed Esperanza!
Let’s start with the varietal. Esperanza is a hybrid varietal that was created by crossing Sarchimor T-5296 and a wild Ethiopia (ET25) variety, all relatively wild and rare varietals that are uncommon to Costa Rica. In fact Aquiares is one of the few farms to produce the varietal at all on a commercial scale. The climate is well suited to growing it, and aquifers and its management are always up to the challenge of meeting its complex nutritional needs. It represents the best of a couple worlds because it’s high yielding and rust resistant, and has a complex, elegant cup profile.
In the cup, expect a very complex profile for sure. It’s remarkably clean for a Central American coffee, giving glimpses of an African coffee like a Burundi, or Rwanda, or at times an Ethiopia or Kenya, but with this depth and character of its Costa Rican coffee attributes. This makes for a coffee that’s very juicy and winey, with notes of sangria with all sorts of berries and blackberries, with an apple pastry note and a sweet lemon cake delicateness. Loads of fruit, but plenty of sugar browning complexity and depth, with crisp clarity.
